EASY TIPS FOR YOUR FAMILY
You’ve probably heard of bringing a reusable bag to the grocery store with you to reduce plastic waste. In fact, in Washington D.C. they have put a 5 cent tax on plastic bags, and in one month alone, they have decreased plastic bags from 22 million to 3 million. But you can also bring a reusable water bottle. Because, for example, Glacier has water machines outside many stores. These are like mini-bottled-water plants that sell you filtered water - without adding that plastic waste. It’s under 50 cents a gallon and a fraction of the price of bottled water. The filtration goes through 5 steps. And the machines are easy to find because they are available in more than 17,000 locations nationwide.
MAKE-A-DIFFERENCE CAMPAIGNS Aside from recycling cans and bottles – there are other unique opportunities to recycle household items like those found in your medicine cabinet. Did you know 40 percent of homes have expired antibiotic tubes in their medicine cabinet? Instead of tossing these tubes, you can try this –- Neosporin has an innovative way to recycle empty or expired tubes. They're teaming up with Terracycle, which recycles used package goods and turns them into something useful. Here are the steps: Go online, get a starter kit and mail it in for free, they'll recycle it, and Neosporin will donate money to a charity or school in your community. Everyone benefits! Another cool campaign is the Green Caps for a Green World initiative from SILK soymilk. Look for the green caps on their products. Then, enter the UPC code online, and choose your green cause. Silk will then make a donation to either Bonneville Environmental Foundation to develop wind energy or FarmAid to support family farms. You make a difference that’s good for YOU and the earth.
SAVE MONEY WITH GREENER CHORES There are many ways you can save money if you go more green. One in particular is if you clean out your cleaning supplies cabinet and utilize baking soda for cleaning most of the surfaces in your home -- for me, that saved me about 75% of my cleaning supply costs. Plus, it's non-toxic, and the box is both compostable or recyclable. Also, the newest appliances can help you make better eco choices and save you money. For example, Whirlpool has a new, top-loading Cabrio high-efficiency washer that uses 76 percent less water and 76 percent less energy than conventional washers – saving more than $1300 over its lifetime. The washer and dryer also have an Eco Monitor to instantly rate how eco-friendly your cycle selection is. This empowers you to make greener laundry choices!
EVERYDAY GREEN FOOD TIP I’ve been passionate for some time about protecting the oceans and its marine life. Over 90 percent of the ocean’s predatory fish like shark, many tunas, swordfish, and cod have been removed from the oceans – and this is threatening our food supply, marine ecosystems, and the ocean’s beauty. One thing you can do is to choose sustainable seafood that is also safer from contaminants like mercury and gives you those great omega-3’s.
