Tempur-Pedic® Offers Tips To Keep Women Sleeping More Soundly
Is your mattress keeping
you up at night?
LEXINGTON, Ky., March 7, 2007 / -- Tempur-Pedic
International Inc. (NYSE: TPX), the leading manufacturer, marketer
and distributor of premium mattresses and pillows worldwide,
offers tips to help improve rest and well being in response to a
poll released today by the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) that
reports stressed-out American women have no time for sleep. In
fact, the study shows that coping with life's busy demands -- on
little sleep -- is affecting their health, mood, weight and
safety.
According to the NSF poll more than half of American women (60
percent) say they only get a good night's rest "a couple of nights
per week." Eighty percent of women say they experience sleepiness
during the day -- and they just accept it and keep on going with
their daily routines, even if it puts them in danger. In an
alarming statistic, the NSF states that "the National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration conservatively estimates that up to
100,000 police-reported automobile crashes annually involve
drowsiness or fatigue as a principal causal factor."
"Over 70 million people are affected by sleep problems, and the
majority of them are women," said Terra Wellington, Health and
Wellness expert on Tempur-Pedic Wellness Advisory Board. "Quality
sleep is a key element to a healthy lifestyle and with life as we
know it getting more and more hectic, women should make the most
of the sleep they are getting."
With women continuing this ongoing battle to get a good's night
rest, Tempur-Pedic offers a simple solution -- find the perfect
mattress. Today's enlightened consumer wouldn't buy outdated
electronics, make a major purchase without first researching it or
drive on tires that leak -- why settle for a mattress that doesn't
provide the best night's sleep?
In a recent clinical study at Oklahoma State University*,
participants who slept on a mattress less than 5 years old
increased sleep comfort by 56 percent. So, how can you tell if it
is time to buy a new mattress to get a better night's sleep?
* If you wake up stiff from the lack of proper mattress support
* If you find yourself rolling towards the center of the mattress
in the
middle of night
* If you can feel the metal springs of your mattress poking at you
* If you find yourself tossing and turning to get comfortable
* If you have slept on your mattress for more than 5 years
You've decided you need a new mattress ... now what? Tempur-Pedic
offers these simple tips on how to evaluate your mattress and
choose a new sleep system with a woman's needs in mind.
Demand The Best Back Support Possible - Make sure the
mattress conforms and supports your entire body. This will help
prevent pain that is caused by the improper alignment of head,
neck and spine during the night.
Consider Allergen-Resistant Mattresses - Look for a
mattress that is allergen resistant. According to a recent article
in The Wall Street Journal, the average mattress will double its
weight in 10 years as a result of being filled with dead dust
mites and their detritus. An allergen resistant mattress, with an
anti-microbial and hypoallergenic cover, will extend the life of
your mattress and protect you from unwanted germs.
Promote Air Circulation - Look for a mattress that promotes
air circulation. Women report specific sleep problems during
different biological stages of their lives. A mattress with an
airflow system promotes circulation, providing maximum comfort
during reported symptoms of menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum
and menopause.
Involve Your Bed Partner - If you sleep with a partner,
take them shopping with you. Both of you should lie on the
mattress as you normally would at bed time (and don't be shy - try
it for at least 15 minutes!). Look for a mattress that doesn't
transfer motion so if one person is tossing and turning or exits
the bed during the night, the other person's sleep is not
disrupted by the movement.
Include a Pillow - You should always use a pillow when
trying out a new mattress in the store (most people don't). This
will more closely match the actual experience you will have at
home and will allow you to make a better mattress choice.
Tempur-Pedic owners take this advice to heart -- they are clearly
making the most of their time spent sleeping. In a December 2006
study of 1,500 Tempur-Pedic customers (60 percent of whom were
women), more than 90 percent of those surveyed rated Tempur-Pedic
mattresses "excellent" or "very good" in the areas of quality,
comfort and value for the money. More than 75 percent of those
surveyed reported recommending the mattress brand to at least five
other people.
