At the start of each summer I recommend a reading list that will help you balance your life, create greater insight, inspire you, or offer excellent resources on areas that develop a wellness lifestyle.  This summer is no different.  I am pleased to announce my 2005 Balanced Living Summer Reading List.

I Need Your Love -- Is That True? By Byron Katie
More than a self-help book, I Need Your Love can change your life and your relationships.  So many of us live to be approved of and feel validated by others when, instead, we need to approve ourselves and be able to validate ourselves.  No one else can give us the level of satisfaction  and contentment we can give ourselves by simply being comfortable with who we are and what we are doing.

Setting the stage for how to love and develop more healthy relationships, Katie says “We all do emotional gymnastics to be seen as wonderful or funny -- just to get what we already have.  And because we’re doing the gymnastics, we don’t see that we already have it.”

I Need Your Love is not the only solution for learning how to forgive or come to terms with a difficult relationship, but it certainly sheds light on how you can make happiness yourself -- instead of relying on others to produce it for you -- and perhaps turn around a relationship in the process.

A Lotus Grows in the Mud by Goldie Hawn
One of the loveliest celebrity biographies of the summer, Goldie Hawn and co-author Wendy Holden tell a candid memoir of Hawn’s memories from childhood, as an adult, and a star.  Not a tell-all, Hollywood book, A Lotus is about finding herself, wanting to be the best she can be, and the many ways she has loved and made time for her family.

Early on, in a self-fulfilled-prophecy chapter called “Joy” she recommends you smile everyday because “A smile is an indication of a happy heart, and when you smile it changes your perception.  It can create a better day.”

If you want to read an uplifting book this summer that, indeed, makes you smile, then pick up this book.

Friends Are Everything by BJ Gallagher
This little book is full of quotes, stories, and truisms about friends.  We all need friends -- they bring us joy and love, help us see more clearly, offer their generosity and care, and provide comfort and support through our troubles.

This book is a thoughtful find if you want an easy beachside book that helps you to reflect on why nurturing your social life is important.  It is also a charming gift book for a special friend’s summer birthday.

A quote noted in the book from Talk Show Host Arlene Francis says it all “Trouble is a sieve through which we sift our acquaintances.  Those too big to pass through are our friends.”

Leave The Office Earlier by Laura Stack
Finally, for the workaholic in all of us, this book is the nitty gritty self-help you are looking for that offers numerous ideas for how to get out of the office sooner (and perhaps off to your summer vacation!) without sacrificing results -- those pesky bottom-liners that your job depends on.

Leave the Office Earlier explores ten key factors that improve results, lower stress, and save time in today’s workplace.  These keys include preparation, order, discipline, and concentration.  If any place is the right environment for better enforcement of these principles, the workplace is it.  For example, in the “Concentration” chapter, the author goes through ways we lose precious time by daydreaming at work and how to put a stop to it or at least manage it (because some daydreaming leads to creative ideas).

The exciting part of this book is not that every suggestion is for you but that there are so many tips and ideas for leaving the office earlier you are bound to find several helps that will save you time right away
