Over
the past five years, the Internet has become a necessary healthcare
resource. You can learn about any number of health-related topics
-- both alternative and conventional, and you can use it as a
resource to plan your life, what you do, and how you do it.
I view
the Internet as both a blessing and a hindrance -- depending on how
you use it. For those who use the Web as a way to find solutions,
then implement them, it can be a timesaving, knowledge-rich
tool to create a wellness lifestyle. |
However,
there are those who would use the Internet as a research hobby, not as
part of the solution. To some degree, all of us get sucked up in knowing
a lot and doing very little. But what you dont want is the extreme --
never feeling like youve captured enough information on a topic of
interest or need, impeding your actual personal progress (which would
include putting the knowledge into action).
Here are some
tips. The main object is to be aware. Then, understand what will actually
improve your life. Get to know what research topics are for pure leisure
education and what subjects require that you act. Finally, stick with trusted
health sites for information that you will implement, avoiding confusion or
procrastination by continuing to research the same information elsewhere.
That said, here
are some of my favorite preventative health websites:
DrWeil.com
This website is comprehensive. I love Dr. Andrew Weil and what he promotes.
You can sign up for his e-mail-based daily and weekly bulletins. His Vitamin
Advisor program gives you a free vitamin profile, with additional opportunity to
buy customized packs of vitamins just for you and your needs. The Healthy
Kitchen section has many recipes, which you can sort by type, ingredient, and
special conditions (such as pregnancy, eye problems, etc.). You guessed it --
carrot dishes are good for eye problems!
nccam.nih.gov
This website is
the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, a subdivision of
the National Institutes of Health. The link above takes you to the Centers
newest newsletter for Spring 2005, with a report entitled NCCAMs Work on
Health Disparities.
Each quarter the
Center sends out an e-mail reminding you of the newest research reports. These
reports contain invaluable primary information on health, alternative medicine,
and preventative healthcare. The main site contains much important information
about the overall status of complementary and alternative medicine, some
information on related NIH-funded studies, and other health information.
Like most
government research websites, I would like to see more information on study
results, but this site is a good portal for todays growing alternative
healthcare movement.
Silversneakers.com
This website is actually a portal to the Silver Sneakers program, offering free
health club memberships and an exercise plan to those who are Medicare eligible
and participate in a designated plan. The site and program promote exercise,
balance, flexibility, and strength for older Americans -- all in hopes of
reducing falls, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis. Plus, by
getting out to a fitness center on a regular basis, you can make new friends --
an emotional health bonus!
CaregiverStress.com
With an aging U.S. population, many may find themselves in the position of
taking care of an elderly family member or parent. This simple site offers tips
and resources for dealing with that potential stress in a positive way. Many of
the stress-reduction tips are also transferable to any stressful situation.
